ABOUT KPL
Kusti Premier League
Traditional Kusti • Modern Rules • Professional League
Kusti Premier League (KPL) is a proposed professional league concept dedicated to preserving, promoting and developing the traditional Indian sport of Kusti through a modern, structured and professionally managed platform.
KPL aims to create a bridge between the rich heritage of traditional Kusti and the expectations of today's professional sporting environment — while respecting the culture, techniques and identity of Indian Kusti.
OUR VISION
To take Traditional Indian Kusti to a new professional level.
KPL envisions a structured league where traditional Kusti can receive greater visibility, organized competition, athlete recognition and commercial opportunities.
The objective is not to replace traditional Kusti, but to strengthen its identity and create a sustainable platform for its future.
WHY KPL?
Traditional Kusti has a deep-rooted connection with India's sporting and cultural heritage.
For generations, wrestlers have trained in Akhadas, developed their skills through discipline and dedication, and carried forward a sporting tradition that is closely connected with Indian society.
However, the modern sporting ecosystem has changed significantly.
KPL is being conceptualized to explore how traditional Kusti can be presented through:
Structured league competition
Regional representation
Professional event management
Athlete recognition
Modern media and digital promotion
Sponsorship and partnership opportunities
Franchise-based participation
Greater public engagement
PRESERVING THE IDENTITY OF KUSTI
KPL's foundation is Traditional Indian Kusti.
The league concept seeks to preserve the essential character of Kusti while introducing a modern framework for competition, presentation, scheduling, athlete management and audience engagement.
Traditional training culture, wrestling techniques, Akhada heritage and the connection between wrestlers and their communities remain important elements of the KPL vision.
Any competition rules and technical procedures would be developed and finalized only after review and guidance from competent wrestling officials and relevant sporting authorities.
FROM AKHADA TO PROFESSIONAL LEAGUE
KPL seeks to create a pathway where traditional wrestlers can move from local and regional competitions toward a more organized professional sporting environment.
The proposed ecosystem includes:
Akhadas → Regional Talent → Organized Competition → KPL Franchises → Professional Platform
The long-term objective is to create greater opportunities for talented wrestlers while giving traditional Kusti a stronger presence in India's modern sports ecosystem.
THE KPL LEAGUE CONCEPT
KPL is being proposed as an 8-franchise regional league.
The initial concept includes representation from different regions of India, creating a connection between teams, local wrestling culture and their respective communities.
Proposed Franchises
Delhi Yamuna
Haryana Kesari
UP Sangam
Bihar Ganga
Deccan Godavari
Gujarat Dumas
Mumbai Juhu
KPL Open Franchise
The final franchise structure, team participation and regional representation would remain subject to feasibility, stakeholder consultation and competent authority guidance.
ATHLETE-FIRST APPROACH
At the heart of KPL are the wrestlers.
The proposed league aims to create opportunities for athletes through:
Organized competitive exposure
Regional representation
Recognition and awards
Professional event experience
Media and digital visibility
Potential sponsorship opportunities
Development of a stronger competitive ecosystem
KPL also aims to encourage young talent to view traditional Kusti as a serious sporting pathway.
TRADITION MEETS MODERN PRESENTATION
KPL intends to combine the authentic character of Indian Kusti with modern sports presentation.
This may include:
Traditional
Akhada culture • Mitti/Sand • Indian wrestling traditions • Regional heritage • Traditional techniques
Modern
Professional event presentation • Digital media • Branding • Statistics • Broadcasting opportunities • Sponsorship • Franchise ecosystem
The objective is simple:
Keep the roots traditional. Make the platform modern.
A NATIONAL PLATFORM
KPL's proposed regional structure is designed to connect different parts of India through Kusti.
From the banks of the Yamuna and Ganga to the Godavari, and from Haryana's wrestling culture to the coastal regions of Gujarat and Maharashtra, KPL aims to explore a sporting identity that reflects India's geographical and cultural diversity.
The proposed venue network is intended to create distinctive event experiences while keeping the traditional character of Kusti at the centre.
BUILDING A PROFESSIONAL ECOSYSTEM
KPL is not envisioned only as a competition.
The broader concept includes a professional ecosystem involving:
Wrestlers
Talent development, competition and recognition.
Wrestling Officials
Technical guidance, officiating and competition standards.
Franchises
Regional representation and local engagement.
Sponsors & Partners
Commercial support and brand partnerships.
Media & Digital Platforms
Greater visibility and storytelling around Kusti.
Venues & Communities
Connecting sporting events with local culture and audiences.
OUR LONG-TERM OBJECTIVE
KPL aims to explore the possibility of building a sustainable professional platform for traditional Kusti where:
Wrestlers get opportunities.
Traditional Kusti gets visibility.
Regions get representation.
Partners get meaningful engagement.
Audiences get a modern sporting experience.
And most importantly:
Traditional Kusti gets a stronger future.
